
Israel Airports Authority Selects Sensis A-SMGCS for Ben Gurion International Airport
Most Field-Proven Level II Advanced – Surface Movement Guidance and Control System to Enhance Runway and Taxiway Safety
EAST SYRACUSE, NY – March 22, 2010 – The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) has selected Sensis Corporation Advanced – Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) for Ben Gurion International Airport. The Level II A-SMGCS will fuse a number of surveillance technologies into a comprehensive view of the airport’s runways and taxiways for enhanced safety at Israel’s capital airport. A Level II A-SMGCS features the improved surveillance of a Level I A-SMGCS plus safety alerts to the controller for the prevention of runway incursions.
The Sensis A-SMGCS fuses surveillance data from Sensis multilateration, Sensis Surface Movement Radar (SMRi), and Sensis VeeLo NextGen™ vehicle locators to provide comprehensive location and identification of all aircraft and vehicles on the airport’s runways and taxiways. Further, the surveillance data is integrated with Sensis Safety Logic conflict detection and alerting algorithms to give controllers advanced visual and audible warning of potential runway incursion situations. All information is displayed to the controller on Sensis Controller Working Positions. The system records all events, including controller voice commands, for future playback. Sensis’ modular approach to A-SMGCS enables hardware, such as additional multilateration ground stations, and software, such as airport automation tools, to be added to accommodate additional interfaces, new runways/taxiways or other needs as the airport grows.
“Sensis’ experience in deploying A-SMGCS at major international airports and their one supplier solution for all major systems were the key factors in our selection,” said Yair Gannot, director of aviation safety, IAA. “The Sensis A-SMGCS will provide our controllers with enhanced situational awareness of the runways and taxiways along with the most advanced conflict detection and alerting technology available.”
The Sensis A-SMGCS will interface with Ben Gurion’s Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system to integrate AGL safety alerts into Safety Logic for an added layer of runway incursion prevention. In addition, the A-SMGCS will interface with a number of Flight Planning Databases to provide controllers with vital flight information to enable controllers to quickly make decisions that affect safety and efficiency.

Sensis A-SMGCS has been selected for more than 40 deployments around the world, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Airports, Australia; Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China; Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, India; King Abdulaziz International Airport (Jeddah) and King Fahad International Airport (Dammam), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; and 35 airports in the United States through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) program.
