ADB LED lighting contributes to the environmental ambitions of Liege Airport
ADB announces that it has upgraded the taxiway ground lighting at Liege Airport (Belgium) from halogen to LED lamps
Zaventem, Belgium, December 14, 2010 - ADB, a global leader in airfield lighting solutions, announces that it has upgraded the taxiway ground lighting at Liege Airport (Belgium) from halogen to LED lamps. The steep drop in power requirement achieved by the use of LED lights not only contributes to the airfield’s environmental ambitions, but also results in major cost-savings. With this new installation of 900 LEDs, Liege Airport is the first Belgian airfield to fully switch to LED for its taxiway lighting.
Liege Airport’s ground lighting consists of about 3400 lights in various areas, ranging from runway centerline over taxiways to runway threshold lighting. ADB already installed LED lighting in part of the airport’s north zone. Three years on, the installation was as assessed, proving that is was a great success, with excellent reliability and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), while minimizing maintenance work and power consumption. This encouraged the airport management to speed up the replacement of halogen lighting, starting with the taxiway lights.
Power consumption reduced by 60%
Contrary to conventional lamps, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) don’t rely on heat to produce light and instead use a much more energy-efficient technology. As a result, they require about 60% less electricity to produce the same amount of light as halogen lamps, thus strongly reducing CO2 production. Installing LEDs is key to Liege Airport achieving its environmental ambitions.
Furthermore, LEDs also have a significantly longer lifetime – 56,000 hours in theory but often four times more in practice – and require much less maintenance than halogen lamps. This strongly reduces the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of LEDs, making it a budget-friendly alternative. Thanks to the reduced operating costs of LEDs, a return on investment is expected in a few years.
Other advantages of LED lighting
The advantages of LEDs, however, are not restricted to savings in power and maintenance; they also increase safety. Tests have shown that the visibility of LED lighting in bad weather conditions is superior to halogen. This is crucial for an expanding cargo airport in an often foggy region. Furthermore, the reduced maintenance needs result in far less interventions on the taxiway, and therefore fewer risks of accidents.
For Luc Partoune, Managing Director of Liege Airport, replacing the halogen lighting is a long term investment: “This installation once more confirms our ambitious environmental policy, which has already been demonstrated by our ISO 14001 certification for environmental management. Energy saving is good for the environment and profitable for the organization. What more could we ask for?!”
