
ADB’s new LED Elevated Runway Edge lights significantly reduce energy & maintenance costs
ADB, a world leader in airfield ground lighting solutions introduces its new line of LED-based Elevated Runway Edge Lights. The EREL/ERES series excels in cost-efficiency, combined with all the other advantages of LED lighting. Fully compatible with existing runway circuits, ADB’s EREL/ERES lighting can easily replace the installed elevated halogen lighting fixtures.
ADB launched its innovative LED lighting on the market in 2002, offering new solutions for taxiway and obstacle ground lighting. The response from customers was overwhelming: nine years later, no less than 350,000 ADB LED lights are installed at airports all over the world. Today, LED technology has further evolved, enabling the introduction of LEDs on runways. This means that all the benefits of LED lights, like low maintenance, longer lifetime or low power consumption, are now available also for runways.
The new EREL/ERES series (Elevated Runway Edge Lights) is designed to fit on the same supports as the existing halogen elevated runway edge fixtures. The system consists of an elevated bidirectional LED light fixture which includes an omnidirectional beam component for circling guidance – as required by FAA and ICAO specifications. As EREL/ERES is fully compatible with existing typical AFL series circuits, there is no need to replace CCRs, transformers and cables. Installation on existing tripods, base plates, stakes or elbow greatly facilitates the replacement of energy-hungry halogen lighting.
More cost-efficient, safer and versatile
With a power consumption of only 33W instead of 150W for a traditional elevated halogen runway edge light, LED lighting dramatically reduces the total energy costs, which, in turn, minimizes the airport’s ecological footprint. Furthermore, new tap setting adjustment of the CCR and the installation of 45W transformers will improve the energy yield and further reduce the global consumption of the current loop. This means lower loads and therefore smaller sized CCRs and transformers. This results in additional savings on installation and maintenance costs.
On top of enhanced cost-efficiency, LED technology also increases airport safety. Tests have shown that the visibility of LED lighting in bad weather conditions is superior to halogen. Pilots receive more accurate visual information, both on the approach path and on the runway. The new elevated LED runway edge lighting solution is available with a synthetic (EREL) or a glass lens (ERES). LED emission directly ensures the correct color; colored filters ensure daytime recognition. The embedded electronics of the EREL/ERES also makes the light output variable like a traditional halogen lamp.
ADB’s EREL/ERES is made from corrosion-resistant materials, and all exterior surfaces are painted aviation-yellow for added protection and visibility.
Proven reliability, based on 9 years of experience

On the market since 2002, our LED-based solutions have already proven their reliability. The LTS/LTC inset lights for example, show a MTBF of more than 250,000 hours in normal operating conditions. This significantly reduces ongoing maintenance costs while considerably increasing the operational availability of the airport.
