Amsterdam, March 13, 2013 – At the ATC Global in Amsterdam this week Terma showcases the SCANTER 5502 and 5602 Surface Movement Radars (SMR), designed specifically to perform airport surveillance integrated as the primary sensor in an airport Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS).
The purpose of the Surface Movement Radar is to maximize safety in an airport by allowing controllers to monitor, to advise, and to instruct aircraft, vehicles, personnel etc. moving around on the ground in an airport. A radar is very suitable for this purpose as it covers a large area and operate independently of light conditions (day/night), visibility conditions e.g. fog, and possible precipitation e.g. rain and snow.
Wind Farm Compliant Approach Radar
On display is also the SCANTER 4002 – a wind farm compatible air surveillance radar.
Wind turbines and air surveillance radars usually do not mix very well due to radar interference caused by wind turbines. In response to this, the SCANTER 4002 air surveillance radar was installed at Copenhagen International Airport (CPH) in May 2012, in cooperation between The Danish Flight Security Authorities NAVIAIR and Terma, with the purpose of demonstrating SCANTER 4002 capability as “wind farm compliant” approach radar and evaluating mitigation of the numerous wind turbines in the area around CPH.
In this initial test phase, the SCANTER 4002 have demonstrated impressive tracking performance with high probability of tracks in all regions and robust tracking of maneuvering aircraft over wind farms.
Recent flight tests over wind farms in the USA with a wide array aircraft have further confirmed the outstanding tracking performance of the SCANTER 4002 with high probability of tracks and very low probability of false track.
