For a week in March 2014, 21 controllers, managers and project leaders from a variety of airport ANSPs who were not involved in SESAR, were introduced to the SESAR Advanced Surface Movement, Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS) Runway Safety Nets for controllers on EUROCONTROL’s Integrated Tower Working Position (ITWP) platform, based in Brétigny.

Participants were introduced to the integration philosophy of using just one screen per working position, and then had the opportunity to act as controllers on simulated ground and runway positions as used at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport.

There was a pleasingly high level of very positive feedback, highlighting the usefulness of this kind of demonstration in developing A-SMGCS Level 2, 3 and 4 and to advance future design capabilities for tower working positions, local implementation of safety nets and the implementation of remote tower facilities.

ANSPs who took part in the exercise:

  • Irish Aviation Authority (IAA)
  • Dubai ANS (DANS)
  • Luxembourg ANSP (ANA)
  • HungaroControl
  • LFV, Sweden
  • Avinor Norway
  • Belgocontrol
  • NATS, UK.
