Two Surface Movement Radars for Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport

Terma Radar Systems have been awarded a contract for two SCANTER 2001i Surface Movement Radars (SMR) to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in China. With this Terma will have 10 radars operational in Chinese airports.

Aarhus, Denmark, 23 September 2010 – The radars will form part of HITT Traffic’ A3000 Advanced-Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS) and will become operational in 2011.

With this award, Terma will have 10 SMR radars installed in eight airports in China, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Macao, Shanghai and Urumqi.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is situated in the central part of Shuanxi Plain southwest of Chengdu City. With 22 million passengers in 2009 and an increase of 16% passengers a year, the airport is the sixth busiest airport in China and an important aviation hub and distribution center of passengers and cargo in the southwestern region of the country.

Airport Surveillance and Safety System
SMR systems are used by air traffic controllers to detect and guide aircraft and vehicles (i.e. baggage carriers, buses, supply trucks, staff cars, etc.) on the ground surface of the airport and thus secure safety. It is the most widely used surveillance system for airport surveillance at present.

Main advantages
By nature, the X-band radar sensor system of the SCANTER 2001i provides improved rain penetration, and the resolution and accuracy of the radar sensor is sufficient to distinguish between various aircraft and vehicles.

Furthermore, especially for airport applications, graceful degradation is important and for that reason the Frequency Diversity system configuration provides a number of inherent fall-back modes.

The SCANTER radar sensor systems offer high reliability and availability and consequently, the life cycle costs of the radar are low.
