Aarhus, Denmark, March 10, 2015 – The Aerodrome Traffic Awareness is an add-on to Terma’s Surface Movement Radar application for airports. It enables detection and tracking of descending aircraft up to 5 Nautical Miles from the radar as well as detecting and tracking non-transponder low-level unidentified flying objects around the airport.

Primary Surveillance Radars in modern airports do often not provide coverage below 2-300 meters and these radars might also have a limited view to the descending aircraft due to buildings or blind zones.

The output from the Aerodrome Traffic Awareness can be fed immediately into e.g. the Advanced Surface Movement, Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS) and presented for the air traffic controllers.

Embedded tracker
Aerodrome Traffic Awareness is based on Terma’s embedded tracker technology. The tracker is developed based on years of intensive product development and frequent tests with all kinds of targets. It has been tested in a number of countries and in many different weather conditions, on ground based as well as on moving platforms.

The Aerodrome Traffic Awareness feature is optimized for tracking air targets moving faster than surface targets. The identified targets are assigned unique id-numbers and position, speed, and course are determined. The tracker follows each target by predicting and updating its kinematic state and other target-related features and makes this information available to the radar image presentation and any external systems e.g. A-SMGCS.

The allowed number of concurrent air targets is at least 150. A track publication filter can be set up so only air tracks with an estimated speed over ground over e.g. 25 m/s in three consecutive scans can be published.
