Terma secures safe travel to Soccer World Cup and the Olympics in Brazil

Terma has been contracted by HITT to deliver and install three SCANTER 5502 Surface Movement Radar (SMR) systems to the Brazilian Airports in Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba.

Lystrup, Denmark, May 17, 2013 – Terma has been contracted by HITT Traffic to deliver and install three SCANTER 5502 Surface Movement Radar (SMR) systems to the Brazilian Airports in Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. The delivery is a part of the Brazilian Airport Administration company INFRARERO’s investment in airports before the World Cup in Soccer in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

All three SCANTER 5502 Solid State Surface Movement Radars will be integrated into HITT’s A3000 Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) as the primary non-corporative surveillance sensor.

The purpose of the Surface Movement Radar is to maximize safety in airports by allowing Air Traffic Controllers to monitor, advise, and instruct aircraft, vehicles, personnel etc. moving around on the ground in an airport. A radar is very suitable for this purpose as it covers a large area and operates independently of light conditions (day/night), visibility conditions e.g. fog, and possible precipitation e.g. rain and snow.

INFRARERO (Empresa Brasileira de Infraestrutura Aeroportuária) is a Brazilian government corporation responsible for operating the main Brazilian commercial airports. In 2011, INFRAREROs airports carried 180 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo and operated 2.9 million take-offs and landings. It manages 66 airports, representing 97% of the regular air carriage activity in Brazil.

Recently, Terma was also contracted by HITT to supply three SCANTER 5502 SMR radar systems to Dublin Airport in Ireland. These orders bring the total number of the newest SCANTER 5000 Solid State family sold above 100 units over 2 years.
